Morbidity. This year we have been fortunate in having Į a very low morbidity rate; unquestionably the health of the hos- pital has been improving during the past few years. In the Government Civil Hospital we are indebted to the Principal Matron for meeting our wishes with regard to placing an ex- perienced Sister in Charge of the Bungalow, and we have to thank Sister Lace for the great improvement which has taken place during her time. According to the B.M.A. standard the combined morbidity rate of the two hospitals was 3.85%. Bungalow 4.7%)

Mortality. At the Tsan Yuk Hospital out of a total of 1,292 cases there were two deaths, and at the Maternity Bungalow of the Government Hospital there were 4 deaths out of 540 cases; giving a total mortality of .53%.

2. Gynecology. Diseases peculiar to women.

During the year there were 304 admissions to the hospital wards (206 to the Tsan Yuk and 98 to the Government Civil Hospital). The total number of operations performed was 196.

There were approximately 1,133 attendances at the Out- Patient Departments.

DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY.

Staff:-L. J. Davis, M.D. (Edin.), Professor of Pathology.

Assistant to Professor of Pathology: Vacant.

Owing to the death of Professor C. Y. Wang in December 1930, the Chair of Pathology was vacant during practically the whole of 1931 as the new Professor did not arrive in the Colony until the December of that year.

The teaching work of the Department was carried on by part-time lecturers. Instruction in Pathology was given by Major Rowlett, R.A.M.C., during the Spring Term and by Dr. J. W. Anderson during the Autumn Term, and Dr. R. S. Begbie gave instruction in Bacteriology during both the Spring and Autumn Terms, The routine pathological and bacteriological diagnostic work which is performed for the University Medical, Surgical and Gynecological clinics was under the supervision of Professor W. I. Gerrard, Dr. A. V. Greaves and Dr. J. S. Guzdar the last named having been attached to the Department on a part-time basis during the period under review.

1,427 specimens were submitted for bacteriological or serological examination; 188 for histo-pathological diagnosis and 32 post-mortem examinations were performed at the Government Civil Hospital.

It was apparent to the new Professor on his arrival, that the complaint set forth by his predecessor in the Annual Report for 1929 was fully justified. The available accommodation obviously inadequate for the proper functioning of a combined department of Pathology and Bacteriology in a University medical school. Plans were immediately drawn up for the subdivision of the main class-room to provide, as a temporary expedient, two rooms suitable for routine work and for research.

Another severe handicap the Department appears to have been labouring under is the lack of adequate technical assistance. One trained Laboratory Assistant and three illiterate coolies ill suffice the needs of a University laboratory attempting teaching, routine work and research in Pathology and Bacteriology, Parsimony in this connection obviously savours of the proverbial pennorth of tar," for however short staffed a Department of this nature be in its professional personnel, given enthusiasm on
